Allpax Develops a Low Cost Way to Reduce Package Abrasion in Reciprocating Retorts

Jun 05, 2014

COVINGTON, LA — Allpax, powered by ProMach, introduces a new system for lowering the abrasion of sensitive packaging that is sterilized in reciprocating retorts. This new protection system features compression molded polymer tray liners that are easily installed and replaced on aluminum or stainless steel retort tray bottoms or used as slip sheets between trays.

The polymer liners are a lower cost, high performance alternative to injection molded trays. Injection mold tooling costs can run into the six figures, while tools for the compression molded polymer liners can cost up to 80 percent less. This fact dramatically lowers initial part costs. Additionally, the new liners are easy to install and replace. A simple grommet system snaps liner sections onto the tray. The liners were designed to protect glass bottles with easily abraded metal tops and paperboard retort containers. Allpax devoted 12 months to the research and development effort.

Aluminum retort trays used in reciprocating retorts are a cost effective solution in the retort room from a life cycle perspective. Aluminum trays last longer than plastic trays and are significantly less expensive than stainless steel trays. One of the problems with aluminum is its relative coarseness, which tends to abrade sensitive packaging in reciprocating retorts. Vulcanized rubber and now the new polymer liners and slip sheets solve the coarseness issue. While the new liners were originally developed for aluminum trays, they can also be used for stainless steel trays if required.
